You are asking two different questions.
The most venomous snake in the US is the Coral snake- very toxic venom, but rarely bites and there are not a lot of deaths from this guy.
Mojave and Rock rattlers also have especially dangerous venoms- but again rarely cause fatalities.
Most of the 12-17 people who die every year will do so from Timber rattler bites- lots of Timber rattlers, they live near people, have a lot of strong venom, and will bite if cornered.
Eastern and Western Diamondbacks rank up there as well, but are not usually found near other people as much.

the coral snake packs the most lethal venom in N. AM. but is rear fanged and lethal human bites are very rare. The next is a fat daddy of a snake. The timber rattler reaches over 6 feet and packs a huge dose of venom. Their have been very few deaths reported in the U.S. due to snake bites. I think twelve in the last 25 years.

The rattlesnake, while not the most venemous, is more dangerous because it is more likely to strike and evenomate those it bites. The Coral snake's venom is the most toxic, but it mainly lives undergound and has tiny fangs, which take a bit of work to penetrate enough to inject venom. The copperhead and moccasin, venemous snakes, are less potent than the rattler.

The coral snake is the most deadly because of the way the venom attaks the body. It attacks the nervouse system, causing parallasis, and eventually respratory failure. Just remember to look at the color of the stripes if you think you see one. If red stripes are touching yellow, it is a corral snake. If red stripes are touching black stripes, then it is harmless. Both snakes have red, black and yellow stripes.

THE EASTERN DIAMONDBACK ,FOLLOWED BY THE WESTERN DIAMONDBACK HAVE KILLED THE MOST PEOPLE.THEY SAY THE EASTERN IS THE MOST AGGRESSIVE.THAT IS NOT MY EXPIERENCE,HAVING SPENT AS MUCH TIME AS POSSIBLE IN THE OUTDOORS.COTTONMOUTH IS THE MOST AGGRESSIVE ,ALSO THEY GIVE NO WARNING OTHER THAN A SMELL(SOME SAY OF ROTTING CUCUMBER)THEY CAN ALSO & DO BITE UNDERWATER.EVERY RATTLESNAKE I EVER CAME UPON EITHER RATTLED OR WAS DOCILE,OF COURSE IF YOU STEP ON ONE THAT'S YOUR BAD ,YOU SHOULD BE MORE AWARE.CORAL SNAKES HAVE A VERY TOXIC VENOM ,BUT THEY ALSO DO NOT HAVE FANGS LIKE THE REST,THEY HAVE TO KIND OF CHEW ON YOU TO GET A LOT OF VENOM IN YOU.THE COPPERHEAD ALSO GIVES NO WARNING BUT SELDOM GIVES A LETHAL BITE,ALTHOUGH THEY DON'T GIVE UP THERE SPACE AS EASY AS A RATTLESNAKE.THE ANTI VENOM IS THE SAME FOR A RATTLESNAKE,COTTONMOUTH OR COPPERHEAD.http://www.crofab.com/treatment/how-to-order/ YES ITS VERY EXPENSIVE,,,,,A FRIEND OF MINE GOT BITTEN BY A COPPERHEAD ,TOTAL HOSPITAL BILL $ 60,000.

The coral snake hands down. Their venom is neurotoxic (attacks your nervous system causing respiratory failure) Luckily, they are a very shy snake, preferring to remain hidden and are not prone to bite although they will. They have a very small mouth and are very limited in where they can bite a human.

coral snake is deadliest if they actually get in a bite. I say the copperhead though, they are as venomous as the best and they don't warn, they like to bite and they hide right where we work and play. They actually bite from aggression.
