It is a combination of both...GKs study the tendencies of their opponents, watch for signs during the kick, then try and get a head start right before the actual kick. Some try distraction, though that does not normally do much at this level.

Occasionally you have GKs who are actually quick enough to react to the actual kick, but that is rare.

It's mainly a guessing game.

There's not really enough time to react under most circumstances. However, if it's penalty kicks at the end of the game, it's somewhat easier for the GK to guess since the players are pretty tired.

(The first Argentina PK miss is an example.)

It definitely involves skills. Ok, so you may guess where the ball may go, but you need skills to catch the ball so the kicker won't have second chance.

a goalkeeper can try to read from the shooters bodylanguage where the ball will go, if the shooter is not very good at faking it. lehmann has a big advantage in my opinion to be a former striker, he knows techniques to shoot the ball a certain way, and therefore might know well where it's going to go by focusing on the shooters feet/legs...I think.

luck is involved in every sport.

I think it involves a little of both and tons of luck. They actually train keepers to try to read the players minds when they shoot penalties and today Lehmann did and awesome job. Kudos to him!!

I think its just a guessing game, guessing which side the guy is going to kick the ball. Wouldn't want to be a goalie!

You're really guessing, as the goaltender really doesn't have much of a prayer against a good strike placed in one of the upper corners.
