I've been trying to make a living on eBay but it just isn't happening. What am I doing wrong? What should I do to get the most money out of the smallest investment?

You gonna have to spend some bucks, You'll beat yourself to death selling nickel and dime stuff. Also treat your customers like you were behind the counter at your own store. I sold $11k last month and taking a month vacation now..LOL

Some people do something called drop shipping. They accept payment for an item they do not have on hand, order and pay for that item and have it sent to the winner of the auction. The positive of this is that there's no real up front out of pocket expense. The downside to this is that if the product you need to order is out of stock, you'll have to cancel the winning bid and tick off the winner...or sometimes there's a 1-2 week wait time which will also tick off the winner. Ebay is becoming increasingly difficult a market to be profitable for a smaller seller as they prefer "powersellers" over people just looking to make a hundred bucks a week or so to supplement income. Fees are pretty ridiculous once you pay listing, final value, and paypal their cut. There are times when I lost money on an item I sold because of this.

You may already be aware of this, but eBay offers classes on how to sell on their site, etc. Their classes periodically show up in various communities throughout the U.S. as an instructional tool for users. I have not attended. I don't use eBay. I've talked to people who have though, and they say it provides you with a good foundation of basic knowledge. I would do that if intending to make a business out of eBay selling. Knowledge is power.

I've only done it as a hobby, but I think that a key to good selling is maintaining good communication with buyers and consistently listing and selling quality items. My 2 cents.

Pick up saleable items at garage sales and flea markets, etc., clean them up and sell them on e-bay.
