Well, Germany invaded Poland on September 1st, 1939, and Japan surrendered on August 14, 1945. Do the math.

from 1939-1996 as the war was not officially ended untill west and east germany were reunited. the conflict lasted from 1939-1945

That depends - war was declared on different dates by different Nations - and usually not at all by the Germans!!!
