Practice. I learned on a real crappy acoustic with thick rusty strings for a month or two. When I finally bought a new electric, I put some super slinky strings on it and I played so freking well, I didn't even believe it.

if you set your mind to it and that if u can make a goal that you can do what can't be done in a short amount of time but it takes a lot of practice and i suggest u practice with the acoustic guitar first because the strings are hard and on the electric guitar are soft so if u can play the acoustic damn right u sure would play the electric guitar like nothing so keep practicing probably 3 to 4 hours a day to get really good in a short amount of time

1. Get a guitar.
2. Get a guitar starter book to learn how to play notes or tabs.
3. Practice.
4. Repeat #4 until satisfied.

well, i just started playing last year and i do most everything by ear. it takes training and practice (like everyone else said) but it mostly takes comitment. you have to really like what your playing in order to be a good guitarist. if you love the guitar and you practice evryday or so you will become good. i am usually against tabs but if it helps you learn how to play then you should use them.

get a good personal instructor and practice day and night. Dont try and teach yourself, its a waste of time, get a teacher that works with you only (not a big group. This will help you learn to play well.

Work through the callusses and pain, keep at it, try to pick stuff up by ear and do finger exercises (guitar mags have some good exercises to try out)
