If the press are to be believed, this is the biggest Hollywood catfight since a battered and bleeding Michelle Pfeiffer emerged victorious as Catwoman in Batman Returns.

I don't think anyone's going to try Sean Young's trick of turning up on chat shows in the costume (you're never supposed to look desperate, and look what happened to her career... ewww, NASTY) but there's plenty of pressure to get different people cast.

This may be one advantage for the studio in having Joss as the director, since he clearly hates Hollywood power games - and if it all goes wrong, they can blame him.

I think he'd like an ingenue, but risking a franchise on it is tricky... Joel Silver is a steady enough hand to either trust or crush Joss's whimsical nature on a choice like this, though.

Here are some of the names currently being bandied about...

Catherine Zeta Jones
(early favourite: not done bad for a Mumbles girl, has she now? There's lovely. She still can look young enough - see Ocean's Twelve for details).

SMGellar
(you have got to be kidding, but rumours are strong)

Charisma Carpenter
(interesting, little too surface for me but interesting)

Katie Holmes
(not actually too bad in Thank You For Smoking, but "dynamic" and "powerful" aren't words you associate with her. Neither does she have, if we're being up front about this, the ... *cough* "physical presence" for the role.)

Kate Beckinsale
(rumour came about when she got papped in the costume at a friend's fancy dress party, but may actually have put her in the frame. Despite everything, you have to recognise Underworld is still a profitable franchise - surprisingly rare in Hollywood - and considering what she did with an utterly appalling script, it'd be two big thumbs up from me when armed with the words of the Joss. Praise to him.)

Eva Longoria
(probably just her publicist rattling the cage to see if anything shakes out, but she's got a lot of recognition at the moment - could happen)

Jessica Alba
Story a couple of months ago... but she's already slotted for Sue Storm again -Fantastic Four And The Silver Surfer (2007) - which would probably rule her out of WW filming. I don't know if the Marvel vs DC politics would also make it trickier.

Sandra Bullock
Not unless it's a rom-com with Nazis. Sorry.

J.Lo
Attached to film Sue Ellen in Dallas: The Movie for '07: nothing confirmed yet so she still might be in reach of it. However, there's still quite a way to go before she cleans the stink of Gigli off her CV.

Salma Hayek
Doing lots of indie projects at the moment and not such a huge star name as in the late '90s. Could be a career resurrection of almost Travolta proportions if she got it.

Lucy Lawless
Ayiyiyiyiyiyiyiyiiii! Nice idea, and you can see how it fits, but less than likely.

Kim Basinger
... is somebody dreaming at her agency?

Michelle Rodriguez
Three words against: Uwe Boll's BloodRayne.
One word for: Lost. Star on the rise again, but how much?

Lindsay Lohan
Er...bwaahahahahaahaa... hahahahaa... hahahaha... ha? No. Please no. Please, dear sweet protector of all that is true and good in the Universe, NO...

OUTSIDERS:
Morena Baccarin
(aka Firefly's Inara. I could see this happening, given the Whedon's whimsical nature and attachment to his friends, and perhaps taking Raimi's tip of "cast talent over star power").

Aishwarya Rai
Priyanka Chopra
Bipasha Basu
Sushmita Sen
Four leading Bollywood lights are all rumoured to have been screen tested. Could be a very interesting crossover, but for a potential franchise this size...?

Jaime Murray
(from BBC's Hustle. She appeared in a WW costume in one episode, and Robert Vaughn liked it so much he took a tape to a Hollywood producer. At least that's what he said the tape was for, but I'd be very happy if she got it.)

Jewel Staite
I'd love it. But it's sadly very unlikely. If they have room for Wonder Girl too she'd be fantastic...
