Is there any discharge present? If not, I would just go buy RePHresh in the vaginal lubricant isle. It restores the natural balance to your "area". Make sure you only wear 100% cotton underwear.
If there is discharge present, you may have a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis.

It depends what kind of smell but it kind of sounds like you might have an infection. Here is the information on two types of infections:
Bacterial Vaginosis
Commonly referred to as BV, bacterial vaginosis accounts for 40% of all vaginal infections in the United States. The cause of bacterial vaginosis is not completely clear, though it is definitely due to some sort of bacterial imbalance in your vagina. Vaginal bacterial infections can be sexually transmitted, but can also be caused by douches and IUDS. It can sometimes be hard to diagnose, because 50% of sufferers will exhibit no symptoms of bacterial vaginosis. If you do experience symptoms they will likely include itching, irritation, and redness. Other common symptoms include a gray, white, or smelly discharge from the vagina.
Yeast Infection
Yeast infections are by far the most common type of vaginal infection. A vaginal yeast infection is caused by an overgrowth of a fungus called Candida albicans. The candida yeast infection is not transmitted sexually, but is caused by baths, damp or tight clothes, or excess moisture in the vagina. Vaginal yeast infection symptoms often include inflammation, itching, and continued irritation. Other yeast infections signs include: pain during intercourse, frequent urination, and a thick, chunky, white discharge from your vagina.
Also another thing, if you are sexually active and you allow your partner to ejaculate inside of you many days in a row, as bad as this sounds, that can also produce a foul smell. But either way my suggestion is, don't have sex for 48 hours and go see your gyno, you don't want to let a bad vaginal infection last to long, because then you could cause PID (pelvic inflammatory disease), you really have to be sensitive with your sensitive areas. Good Luck!!

Perhaps if you just had your period you should douche or soak in a hot tub. You could make a sitz bath by putting a little baking soda in warm water and soaking your 'area' in it for 5 or 10 minutes.
You did not state if you are sexually active. If you are sexually active, an odor could be a symptom of a sexually transmitted disease.
I once heard that sometimes women get an odor when they have multiple sex partners, the sperm actually are territorial and will 'fight' causing an odor.
You should really get checked out by a medical professional to be sure everything is okay.

You probably have a little bacteria or a yeast infection. You could ask your OB/GYN about the problem. Alternatively, you could just look for a yeast infection treatment med over the counter and see if that corrects it.
I am just guessing, good luck.

it could simply be a matter of hygience but it could also be as bad as an infection. the best thing to do is go see your gynecologist as soon as possible before taking any further steps in trying to eradicate the odor. some odor relief might just aggravate your problem. don't take any chances. see a gynecologist immediately.

It may be bacteria vaginoisis also know at Gardnerella. You should see your doctor. If it is Gardnerella they will prescribe metrogell to insert in your vagina. I had it before and it is really embarrassing. Good luck, but be sure that you see a doctor right away because it could be something more serious.
