It is very satisfying, not to mention alot cheaper. When you have guests over to your home and you're showing them around, it is so great to say "I did this by myself", plus you can get creative and have a one-of-a-kind. It is almost a deep-seeded instinctual thing to create a home and your surroundings, much like man did in caves, forest, and jungles for thousands of years.

Cheaper - For example, a plumber wanted to charge me $250 to change the faucet on my kitchen sink, that was on top of the $60 service fee and I was providing the new faucet. I did the same job in 30 minutes.
Faster - I fixed my toilet in less than an hour, that included the drive to the hardware store to get a part. (And it only cost me $10).
Fun - I just like to do it.

Its cheaper if you sort of know what you are doing, maybe more expensive if you don't. Maybe dangerous sometimes too. Also, you acn customize more and do things as artwork.
