If you already know something about reading music, then just about any book would do to help you learn about chording and fingering. I would recommend that you get a book with songs that you like and songs that you are familiar with. That way you will be more likely to practice.

hal leanord books has several hundred books that can be used. You can also download stuff from the internet if you google "guitar lessons" I would highly recommend that you get a book that has a "play along" cd to help you.
Don't fall for the learn in 45 minutes stuff, that isn't possible.
The best thing you can do is take lessons at your local music store, they usually run about 15 bucks for 1/2 hour; but you will learn more faster this way.
LEARN YOUR FRET BOARD, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Also take time to learn your scales and then your modes, and learn them in different places on the fret board.
Keep in mind that guitar is different than most instruments because you can play most of the notes in more than one place on the fret board, this cause timbre to become just as important as pitch.
Most important of all is to remember to HAVE FUN! Guitar is wonderful and will give you years of enjoyment and stress relief and you may actually make a little money at it too.
GOOD LUCK!

This is going to seem silly, but John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote a guitar teaching book - and it really works well. It's what I used to learn how to play - and it helped because I knew all the songs, so I knew if I was playing it right or wrong!! other books had songs I didn't know and had no idea, but this book was GREAT! I hope they still publish it!

Nothing beats instruction from a good teacher. Trust me, take a night school course and you'll be so far ahead of where you are now you won't believe it. It's also the best deal around. Usually 8 - 10, 2hr lessons for the price of two 1hr private lessons.
Do yourself a favor and take some lessons. Ask your questions and get immediate help. Can't go wrong.
