It's becoming less of a focus, in large part due to technology and how it will, arguably in the near future, be integrated entirely into school curricula. The spell check feature is going to replace spelling lessons. Just another way technology "makes life easier."
Theorists also believe that we'll "pick up" our mistakes and thier solutions as they're identified-- but these folks obviously haven't spent any time in the real world. Theory and real-world application rarely coincide. Why would any child take the time to recognize a spelling deficiency if there will always be a button to click that will correct things for them? What is the motivation?

They still teach spelling in Indiana. My daughter has weekly tests. I think some schools or school systems may focus more on reading and phonics than actual spelling.
As far as grammar goes, I hardly remember doing any grammar. I remember diagramming some sentences. So I am sure that I learned the basics of grammar in elementary school. In junior and senior high it was a bit more advanced because I was in gifted and talented classes.

I was an amazing speller in school. I am now 20, but my teacher in 2nd or 3rd grade said that I wouldn't need spelling because we have spell checker. I hope the schools don't ever undermine the importance of spelling. People have a hard enough time spelling when they DID have it in schools.

Defenetly not, true spelling is one of the most important things to teach kids. And I still have siblings in school and they are all taught spelling, in every grade whether they have a text book or not.

Our grade school use to have "spelling" now it's included in "reading". The kids now have vocabulary words. They get 1/2 point for spelling it correctly & 1/2 point for getting the definition correct. Our school is in Southern Illinois, by the way.

I did in one state up to second grade, upon moving across country the spelling program was diminished to a five minute program thrice a week. All spelling stoped once entering fifth grade and learning to use spell check.

My daughter is in the second grade and my son is in the fifth grade. They both have weekly spelling tests. So, at least here in Oklahoma they still have spelling.

I'd believe it, especially after about 6th grade. I grade standardized tests, and 10th grade spelling is the same as 6th grade, except when they try to use higher than 6th grade vocabulary, they can't spell it.
