Obviously they get your past medical history first, what are the current symptoms of your problem, how long you've had this problem, have you taken any medication like pills (birth control included) , or used ointments, creams, lotions, are you allergic to anything, does this problem come and go, do you use makeup, how's your nutrition, do you drink plenty of water, do you follow a good facial health routine, like keeping your complexion clean. Do you exercise? Do you borrow anyone elses makeup? Do you use any self tanning products, or go to tanning centers, etc. etc
A doctor will lead you through during consultation, and feel free to ask as many questions as you like, even if you think it's silly. Believe me, there are no silly questions, I've heard people use toothpaste (of all things) on their pimples because someone told them it will make them go away, or retinol, Ha ha. Ditch the urban myths, pay attention to your doctor, preferably a dermathologist. Mosts of it depends on what the doctor notices and so the right questions can be asked to fill in the picture needed to diagnose your problem and possible solution.
Good Luck

What you've tried before, current medications, and family history. They need to know anything that could help them with your skin, so be honest. Some acne meds are harsh, so if there's a chance you're pregnant they should know. If you're on birth control, they need to know. Just tell the truth.
