What fun! It will be very busy in July - but if you plan ahead a little bit you should be okay.

Check out http://www.backpackeurope.com/

A couple of personal recommendations:

Interlaken and stay at Balmers Hostel
Brugges and stay at Snuffles Inn
Zermatt
Cinque Terre region of Italy
San Remo Italy and stay in the hostel that is a castle

Of course, you should hit some of the bigger cities like London, Paris, Florence, Barcelona. I also really loved Ireland - but it is kind of off the beaten path. Portugal is also beautiful - but again a bit far removed.

Rick Steves always has good info: http://www.ricksteves.com/ + there is a graffitti wall that is filled with great info from other travellers.

When you back pack you will meet so many people in the hostels and you will get lots of suggestions and may even end up with travelling partners.

Have a great time and be safe!

Where you should visit will depend on your interests & also your budget. Central & Eastern European countries are often cheaper, but not also often have their own currency, which means exchanging money in each place. In that case, you want to take out approximately the amount you expect to spend so you pay the least in conversion fees.

I loved Prague. It was beautiful & full of history. The cost was cheap & the people were friendly. I'm looking at visiting several other central/eastern European countries this Fall. I hear Budapest is a must, & for history, I'd like to go to Krakow, Poland. I'd also like to see Croatia, based on what I've read & heard about it.

I've been to London & it is worth spending a few days, but expect food & transportation to be one of the highest in this City. Most museums are free though. If you go, definitely see the British Museum, home of the Rosetta Stone & many Egyptian artifacts.

Venice is a lovely city. Costs are a little high, but also worth a couple of days. Skip the pricy gondola ride & spend your money on museums or the Basilica San Marco. stay outside the main tourist areas (Rialto & Basilica San Marco) and you can find cheaper lodging. You can also take day trips to Padua & Verona from here for 5-10 Euro, round trip, depending on destination, or continue your trip along this route to Milan.

Amsterdam is worth a couple of days. Don't miss the museums, but skip the touristy Maddam Toussad's wax museum. By the Austrialian brand chocolates for a treat! I also enjoyed a couple of days tasting beer & chocolate in Brussels. Brugge is an excellent place to spend a day or two. Quaint town with great chocolate at Dumon, a family owned chocolate shop. :) Climb the Belfry, but don't eat at the restaurants around the square. they are overpriced because of the view & the food isn't as good as the ones in the alley ways.

Paris is definitely worth a few days too. I probably don't need to say too much about it. There's a great little Italian restaurant at Pont Neuf; can't remember the name, but if it's still there, it's worth a stop.

If you can catch a cheap flight on Ryan Air to Dublin, I'd recommend that too. Friendliest people we met were in Ireland & the country is beautiful.

Good luck planning & have a wonderful time!

12 days is somewhat short, so i could propose unlikely to places that are very some distance aside, or you will spend all it slow in transit from one place to the subsequent. in case you desire to be certain in basic terms huge cities and the optimum form of places, i could say to do London, Amsterdam, Paris and Cologne (Germany). That way you will get 4 countries in, nonetheless have time in each and each to extremely see some issues, and characteristic in basic terms approximately 4 hours transit time between each and each end. in case you're no longer conscious of Cologne, that's a good sized city in western Germany, located on the Rhine river. that's an incredible place from which to take a Rhine boat cruise for an afternoon or 2 and spot a number of Germany's castles. there is likewise a eye-catching cathedral (the Dom). in case you desire high quality over quantity, i could say persist with 2 countries, optimum. In France you need to make a decision from Paris, Versailles, Chartres, and component to Normandy (Bayeux is a reliable base there). In Belgium you need to be certain Brugge (additionally spelled Bruges), between the main eye-catching small cities in Europe, Gent, Brussels. interior the Netherlands attempt Amsterdam, Delft, Maastricht. In England there is London of direction and likewise Dover (which would be reached via ferry from France or Belgium - that's exciting) and tub in basic terms for a start up. My record of "ought to-see" places in Europe is quite different from this, yet 12 days isn't adequate time to shuttle long distances (somebody pronounced Greece??). you will spend all it slow in trains or airports, finding out and in of hotels, unpacking and repacking. which would be a actual pity.

Come to England, visit London and then travel up to Edinburgh. From the UK you can get across to France by train, or you can catch a cheap flight (use easyjet or ryanair) to almost anywhere in Europe.
