Recently I saw a video clip of a stripper dancing at an Egyptian wedding. I was horrified for the bride. This, to me is very disrespectful. Is it true? Why?
I can understand having a good bellydancer to dance, but not a stripper. Where do the strippers come from?

Perhaps it was a wedding of an Egyptian couple in another country.

I live in Egypt and stripping is completely illegal here. Belly dancers have been arrested for not covering. They get away with very revealing costumes by putting flesh colored nylon material between the bra-top and the belly skirts. They are actually one-piece dresses with a zipper either down the back or the side, most often.

A stripper at any wedding reception is always crass and in bad taste. I have no idea why on earth anyone would think of hiring one except to humiliate the bride. Shame on them.

(As to where the stripper came from, if it actually happened in Egypt, which I think is highly unlikely, she probably came from Russia or one of the -stans. A lot of the dancers here are Russian or East European anymore...to the point a lot of the Egyptian dancers are being put out of work.)

Oh my goodness how the world cultures creep into other cultures. as an Egyptologist and I am horrified. That "wedding" was NOT done in Egypt I can tell you that. They may have said it was an Egyptian wedding but isn't. Egyptian weddings are held in public. Thursdays are the night chosen as Friday is like our Sunday. They hold "public weddings so more people can celebrate with them in the happy occasion, and they hold the weddings at the Huge Fancy Hotels where EVERYONE celebrates with the happy couple. There is always a belly dancer to loosen everybody up, and get the party going, there is a band with drums and horns! Its a BIG party. Egypt is a Muslim country and they believe in complete modesty. If this video was of a stripper dancing at a wedding, the video was a fake. They would never disgrace their religon, their Countries morals, or dishonor the women present. Where did you get this video. An adult book store?

There are stripper clubs in Egypt - in the tourist beach towns. Though such things are not officially sanctioned and are actually illegal - it is well known amongst many.

A stripper in a traditional Egyptian wedding though is very strange - it might not have been such a traditional wedding at all and the bride might have been aware that a stripper was going to be performing. Or it might not have been a stripper but a belly dancer who went too far :-)

No, it is not true!! you were probably watching some sort of porn movie. I have been to over 300 egyptian weddings and have been living in egypt for the last 20 years!!
belly dancers are common in wedding, but surely not strippers.

Bellydancers (traditional and respectfull ones) do not take their clothes off in a show, or any party. Bellydance is an art. Maybe it was a stripper trying to immitate a bellydancer and I dont think it was celebrated in Egypt.

My Mom is a Wedding Stripper. She strips at all SORTS of weddings. As a matter of fact they are making a movie about her called The Wedding Stripper. Roseanne Barr is playing her in the movie.
