Compost is an excellent way to improve the soil structure and it helps in the uptake of nutrients as well as protect the plant from many diseases and nematodes.
It contains many beneficial microorganisms that help bind soil particles together which allow water and oxygen into the soil...thereby preventing compaction. You'll find after you've applied compost and tilled it into the soil, that the soil will be become and remain soft. Compost helps to retain nutrients that you add through the application of fertilizers and make them more available to the roots.
Good compost has an "earthy" smell (it reminds me of mushrooms). It should be free of weed seeds and any diseases that will harm your plants. Just remember to keep the soil moist (not water-soaked) and you'll be pleased. If you're energetic enough and have the resources to make repeated applications, you might want to consider making monthly applications (small amounts-enough to cover the soil) of compost around the base of your plants so you can feed the beneficial organisms and encourage their reproduction.
I worked for a compost manufacturing company and learned the benefits of using it on plants.
Hope I was of some help in answering your question. Good Luck!

Compost is very good for plants it has a lot of nutrients in it that are released as it breaks down.
Peat is a moss that retains moisture - it is also good for plants because it keeps them moist in containers and as it breaks down provides some nutrients for the plants - although, not as much as compost.

If you are talking about the dirt the compost pile makes..it is wonderful for plants. you can either work it into all the dirt, dig a hole and put some in then put in your plant, or you can sprinkle it around a plant and scratch it into the dirt. That stuff is worth a million.
