As the other people reported, Zionism was a movement started in the late 1800s that said the solution to to vicious anti-Semitism in Europe would be to form an independent Jewish state in the area indicated by Biblical heritage.

Sadly, this nationalistic movement (there were others at that time, including the rise of Welsh nationalism) coincided with the growing desire of Arab tribes to free themselves from first the stringent Ottoman Empire and then their colonial masters by forming a Federation of Arab states, loosely modeled on the United States model.

The Jewish state -- settled at first by European Jews escaping the Holocaust -- was seen by this group as another group of oppressive Europeans trying to impose their will on the Arabs.

Zionism is the belief that the Jewish people are historically tied to the land of Judea and the surrounding area. The Romans renamed it Palestine after the Diaspora in AD 63 to discourage the return of Jews. Many non-Jews, myself included, believe that the Jewish people have a right to this land and that the "Palestinians" are the actual interlopers. The state of Israel is often referred to as the "Zionist Occupation" by Arab press because they cannot recognize Israel as a legitimate country.

* Movement founded by the Viennese Jewish journalist Theodor Herzl, who argued in his 1896 book Der Judenstaat (The Jewish State) that the best way of avoiding anti-Semitism in Europe was to create an independent Jewish state in Palestine. Zionism was named after Mount Zion in Jerusalem, a symbol of the Jewish homeland in Palestine since the Babylonian captivity in the 6th century BC. The movement culminated in the birth of the state of Israel in 1948.
