this is a two fold questions
location of files and program
It depends on the program
Most programs should work with GIF and JPG
some work with bmp as well
If you hav Microsoft Office 2000 or below, they have a great photoeditor.
Its in the office menu under tools
Location is easy

open Windows explorer,
Create your folder you want to have them stored, do a search for each file extention, then move the files there

Are you using a PC? I think it's easiest to convert all pictures to jpg file extensions. If you have a pc, you can use Paint (or it used to be called Paintbrush) to convert bmp files to jpg. Pull up your bmp pic in Paint and do a Save As, then select jpg from the menu in the dialogue box to convert the picture.

Also, I have Adobe photo software that reads several types of picture files and can convert them to jpg. So it really boils down to finding software that reads all kinds of pic files and can save them as jpg images.
