But really this list is always changing. Kubrick is almost always #1 though.

Here are my five in no particular order:
Akira Kurosawa- Too bad most people havent seen his movies. People are too scared to sit and watch foreign films and read captions.
George Lucas- All his movies may not be the greatest but the technological advances he made and his signature sound have been some of the biggest advances in the history of film
David Fincher- Has an eye for creepy, unnerving pictures. Se7en was pure genious and well put together. The Game was disturbing, and we all know about Fight Club. Watch out for his new film Zodiac. I smell a classic in the making.
Stanley Kubrick- Put together one of the most impressive libraries of movies as a director ever. Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Dr. Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket, Spartacus. The list goes on.
George A. Romero: Has done the impossible for zombie movies. Horror is a genre that doesnt get much respect as serious filmmaking but George A. Romero was able to write and direct some of the best horror films ever. Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Creepshow, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead. All very artistic and a perfect example of how horror movies can be entertaining as well as cinematic gems.
Honorable mention goes to Martin Scorsese, probably the best director to never win an oscar for his impressive works.
