After months of helping his cousin rebuild his car he lent my son his car to go to the prom. Excited, he showed it to his friend who test drove it into a tree. The friend will only pay the $500 deductible but the cousin wants more to cover the estimated $375 over 3 years increase of ins. rates. What should be sons moral obligation to this mess?

Honestly, I think your son should pay. He sounds like a nice, hardworking boy, but he unfortunately made an poor decision.

$375 is not a lot to pay for the lesson that he will have learned about responsibility and accountability. It's also not worth possibly messing up he and his cousin's friendship over.

This accident had nothing to do with your son's cousin and everything to do with your son. Therefore he should be on the hook for it 100%. Having said that, if his tree crashing buddy is any kind of a friend, he will step up and pay at least half the total. I think you are about to find out what kind of a friend your son has.

Your son is "responsible" for his actions and should payback anything the cousin has to pay for.

The friend who actually wrecked the car should pay the deductible and half the insurance increase.
He didn't loan the car to himself, your son needs
to take responsiblity for his own actions.

He should accept responsibility for letting an unauthorized driver get behind the wheel, and pay it all.His freind is very noble in his offer to help but again the car was in your son's care and therefor, morally, the responsibility rests on his shoulders.

You're responsible since it is still under your liability. You could sue for damages and such.

if the friend won't help foot the bill it's your son's responsibility...he's the one who had permission to drive the car ...not his friend..that was your son's fault....
