Because they're brainwashed by the Right... the propaganda machine of the Right would have made Joeseph Goebbels proud. The majority of people from this group who are higher leaders and have influence are emotionally underdeveloped, yet have a very high IQ, an obsession with power that rivals Kublai Khan, and a bankroll that allows them to pay for the machine to stay well-oiled.
The Cheney/Rumsfeld power block is a bulldozer for these principles. The things that they do are exactly what they wanted to do, especially the invasion of Iraq. They are willing to use any event or excuse to do what they want. This is Machiavellian to the max. September 11th was clearly used as an excuse to invade Iraq almost before the dust settled around ground zero.
The Democrats do not have any such well-organized machine anymore. This stark contrast may well be the very reason why we do need to start a third party that speaks for the actual majority in these United States.
