The path to our front door isn't very well placed and everyone just walks across our lawn, and we are wearing a path. I have the idea of embedding either stone or concrete pavers in the lawn, spaced so the grass still grows between them, to minimize damage to the lawn. I am planing to dig a hole in lawn in the shape of the paver (slightly deeper than the paver is tall), fill it with about an inch of compacted sand, and fit the paver in the hole. (I live in a warm, relatively dry climate, so frost isn't an issue). Is there anything wrong with this plan?

you should relevel andpick them up if they become undermined by grass roots
people can stub their toes on uneven stones!

That's a good plan. I'd probably remove all of the grass in the path of your pavers, rather than cutting out paver-shaped holes. The holes will be much harder to level, but it can be done.
Go ahead! You're doing it right.

An easy way to level your pavers is to use a string betwen two sticks and a string level. Rest of your plan looks great. Enjoy your pavers!

that is a good plan. i just recently did something similar but i used pea gravel instead of sand so i could easily level out the pavers and water will drain down into the ground when it rains.

it can be challenging to make them level...I would recommend cutting out the grass in the trail first, lay some sand, then gravel then the pavers.... the sand and gravel will help them to settle more evenly.

It might be a good idea to put a layer of weed control fabric under the sand.
