caste is just another word for the different levels in a community.. it either means that or just the different types of communities that exist.. No caste system does not apply only to east Indians... most Hindus have it... i wouldn't say Indians cause there are other religions here like Islam and Christianity who dont have castes though they may have several segregation's.

Short answer: a caste system is a rigid class system that almost always prohibits upward mobility. You are where you are on the social ladder simply by virtue of being born to the right--or wrong--parents.

Not sure if it only exists in India.
