I have heard a lot of bad thing about SOME (not all) modelling agencies and how they make you pay for photos and photo sessions before they take you on then never give you any work. Always check with the local Better Business Bureau.
NEVER GO ON YOUR OWN ALWAYS TAKE YOUR PARENTS!!!! BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU SIGN!!!
I think a better starting place before you go to agencies is if you have a friend who is reasonable with a camera (do not have to be a professional or even that good just okay) Just take 100 photos of yourself in different poses, clothing and backgrounds then pick out 10-20 nice photos. You can then use this as a portfolio, and even better instead of printing them which cost you money every time, host them on a website and get some business cards print with the website address on and just hand these out instead. This is a far cheaper way of doing it and with no RISK. You should never have to pay to get a job if you do there is a high chance it is a scam.
However if you would like a personal portfolio site please contact me and I will set you on up for free. I can design you a fully personalised flash website with as much or little information and then host it for you. This site can contain a gallery of your photos, personal information, list of work, contact details, etc or if you prefer just a couple of photos and nothing else. It can be password protected and all images will be protected as is humanly possible, or the photos can be available to download.
Examples of work can be provided on request. Just message me here if you want, I am a professional website designer but have lots of free time (and enough money) so I am currently doing free sites for small bands, small artist etc, basically anyone who could not afford them otherwise. I have my own hosting server so can offer hosting servers or you can host the site yourselves. No images sent to me will be used for anything other than your site and I will not give anyone your detail or link to the site. You will have complete control and the site can be removed or changed at any time. This is not a scam and I will design a site for FREE, I do not need the money, and enjoy working. If you do want it message me you can tell me what you want and how you want it done and I will help.
PARENTS PERMISSION REQUIRED before i will do any work.
Also i may refuse to host any image if i think it is inappropriate.
FAMILY IS VERY IMPORTANT and if your mum does not want you to do it DON'T!! it is not worth falling out over.

Wait, bide your time, and build up personal and professional skills in the meantime. Participate in school plays and community theaters. Go to a college to study acting. You are much more likely to have a long, succesful career if you start as an adult, because if you start younger you are more likely to change and lose the appeal that you might have to the people who are hiring you. Most of all, decide whether you want to be an actress or a model. These two professions are different in almost every way, and are completely separate in most cases.
By the way, I know how you feel. I personally want to become a director, but I'm only fifteen.

There have been many cases for some movies that they advertise for actors/actresses who need specific abilities to play the role. For instance, i don't recall the name of the movie, but they needed a ten to twelve year old that could ride a horse. This girl saw the add on the web and landed an audition and got the role. Plus you don't need an agent to do auditions. There are a lot of new actors that don't have one to start off with and probably don't get one until after their first movie or paycheck. My sister is a model and she went to classes and now has her portfolio, but if you want to take that route, it may involve a lot of traveling back and forth between the agency and your house during the week on school nights.

If you really want it, then I say go for it. You're still very young - so make sure not to get your mind set on it, because you might change you goals in the future. If I were you, I would go to auditions once in a while and save your money. Be in high school plays, so you get experience working in front of crowds. Also, you could go to a college for drama/acting. Most child stars' careers don't last long - so it might be better in the long run if you wait a while to get into the business, anway. Good luck - and don't give up!

I am only 13 as well and i want to become an actress! I took an acting class and my teacher recommended me to an agent, i only payed for the class and i will most likely be working this summer!also, my mom just took some shots of me and gave them to my teacher so he could give them to an agency he said there was no need to pay for a professional one unless the agency tells you to! My mom was like that also but acting teachers tell you about everything!

It's great to have a goal, and a passion for what you persuit as a career, way to go! Modeling is very competitive, but good researching is never waisted. A second career, is also good to have to fall back on, should your first choice not be favorable in future terms. The more skills you acquire, now, the better prepared you will be, good luck!

Follow your dreams. Start baby-sitting, and saving your money. Then get professional pic's and make a portfolio. Look in newspapers and magazines for casting calls. You don't need an agent to start. Good Luck.

when you have a dream don't let it go
you only live once. Save money by doing after-school stuff and in the weekends. Look out for opportunities out there that can bring you to a stage of there's none then
see what money can do. follow your heart and dreams.
i once had a dream but i let the opportunity pass ans now there are no more dreams in my life. Go ahead, there's a future waiting for you ;)

It sounds like you are a good kid. Keep your grades up, be responsible so you can prove to your parents you are strong enough. Go online for modeling agency websites. See how you could get started. Since you're young, they might want you to be a pageant girl first. FOLLOW YOUR HEART
