I started having a very strange pain in my shin about 10 days ago. It's actually to the outside of my left shinbone. The strange thing is that it only hurts when touched or when I walk a lot, but the pain feels almost like the pain from a burn. Even just light contact with the skin, like something brushing against it, can cause serious pain. Any kind of pressure on it is pretty excruciating. It feels almost like a sunburn rather than the pain that comes from trauma. The pain feels almost entirely like it's at the skin level, rather than in the muscle.
There is no visible discoloration or anything, and I don't remember doing anything to that spot. The area with the pain is about 6-8 sq inches on my leg. The pain hasn't lessened since I started noticing it, and it has started hurting when I walk more often than it did at first. I can't sleep on my left side because even that light pressure on it hurts too much. Any ideas what could have caused this? Did I damage a nerve or something?

This is usually caused by Herpes Simplex 1 or 2 virus. Or shingles.. which is actually caused by a similar virus.
I know because I suffer from this.
Of course see a doctor but it sounds like the first stage of a herpes breakout.

How strange. The only pain I've had in my shin before is a shin splint. I would definitely go to the doctor and get that checked out right away. I suppose it could be something like a blood clot and you don't want to take that risk!

You sciatica nerve is disturbed. Press the soft portion one inch above towards the ankle on affected leg between great toe and the next finger. You will observe excruciating pain. Put some cream or oil and press this point daily for 15 minutes. You will come out of your trauma within few days. Good luck and best of health.

Sounds like nerve end damage that could be from a shin splint. Orthopedic doctors know about those things. Maybe an x-ray would show something.

You better see a doc.....there are so many things that it could be. The first two things that came to my mind first are phlebitis and DVT.(deep vein thrombosis) Look those up on a search engine and see if the symptoms match. DVT is dangerous if left untreated and phlebitis is curable with antibiotics. The area is usually red, hot to the touch, and very tender. Either way, call your doc ASAP. (i would if I were you) Good luck.

Hum.. Not a doctor but I believe that could be arthritis, My grandma died by one side of her body hurting and feeling the same symptoms that you have from her shinbone to her left leg. and she stayed paralyzed from that side. I'm not saying you will too, no way! It could be nothing, but if I was you I wouldn't ask here, I would go straight to a Doctor and have that check.

my ex had this a few years ago , but it was on his stomach..no redness, just pain. He went to the dr. and the dr. said give it a few more days. It just went away on its own and he never got it again. Dr had no answers for it either, but obviously , it was nothing serious
