He is 6 months old, and we started out breastfeeding, which didn't work out due to some health problems I have and he wasn't getting enough milk. We had been supplementing w/ formula since birth, so we just switched over to that all the time. At about 3 months he started acting like he just wasn't getting full, and he was eating every hour, to hour and a half. So we started some baby food with his formula, now, he doesn't want his bottle and he will eat almost two 4 oz jars of food at a time if I let him at lunch, and a little more than a jar of cereal with fruit in it for breakfast. I can manage about two 8 oz bottles in him a day lately...is this okay, what if he wants less? He is a big baby, almost 17 lbs, well over 22 inches long. my friends baby who is the same age still is mainly formula fed and weighs 16 lbs. Mine seems super healthy...so any advice?

Babies will require less formula as they eat more solids. In the beginning all calories and nourishment came from formuala or breast milk now the majority will come from solids. However , babie need milk/formua and should not be given cows milk before age 1. The protein level in cow's milk is much higher and a babies kidneys may not always be able to handle the increase , thus causing kidney damage.
It is not uncommon for a baby to drink only 16 - 24 ounces of fromula a day once he/she is eating solids/ drinking juice and water but they still need the calcium and other nutrients provided by the formula.
Try giving 4 oz of formula with his breakfast
2 jars of food and 4 oz of formula with lunch
2 jars of food and 4 oz with dinner and at some point a 6 -8 oz bottle with no other food.

Just because he weighs more doesn't necessarily mean he's healthier. He still needs the vitamin and minerals, not to mention calcium and iron, that he will mainly get from his formula. You should really check with his Dr. about what the minimum amount of formula to give him a day should be. Since babies under 1 year old should not drink cow's milk, he will need formula at least until his first birthday and maybe longer. When he gets hungry, try giving him a bottle before you feed him the baby food. This way he doesn't get full off of the baby food and then not want the bottle. Hope this helps.

Your baby should be taking about four 8oz. bottles a day and 2- 21/2 jars of stage 1 or 2 baby food a day. Your baby needs to stay on formula until at least 1 year of age. Talk to your baby's doctor.

I agree, 12 months. My 10 month-old only takes three bottles a day for a total of 24 oz. He likes food better. Until your baby is able to replace all the nutrients in formula with real food, it's best to keep him in it. Try it cold in a sippy cup. I am jealous that you won't have to break your baby of the bottle habit like I will. Good luck!

That seems like enough formula, but he's supposed to stay on formula until 1 year of age. If the baby food you introduced to him first was sweet, then he probably isn't going to want the formula as much.

3 8oz bottles a day should be enough, just at nap and bedtime. Use this as a routine. Add cereal in with the baby food to fill him up more. This tends to help. He may also be going through a growth spurt which tends to cause a baby to eat more. Hope this helps.

he should eat formula until he is at least a year old. I took my kids off formula at one year. a baby at 6 months should eat 3-4 8oz bottles a day plus baby food.

Your son will drink less formula when he is eating. However, with that little liquid a concern might be dehydration especially during the hot months. I would highly recommend that you talk to the doctor or the doctor's nurse and make sure that your precious little boy is getting enough liquids. Also, try to give water in addition.

Most doc. say 12 months but mine was drinking whole milk when they where 10 months old. The best thing foe you to is to talk to baby's doc. to see what he thinks. Try giveing a sippy cup with the formula in it

He should be consuming around 24-30oz of formula a day along with Cereal, fruit, Veggies and Grains. All babies are different but their are certain vitamins and minerals in formula that your baby needs in his first year that he won't get enough of with food alone. But like always, check with you pediatrician and see what she/he says. Good Luck.
