Fairfield County and inexpensive don't belong in the same paragraph together. Fairfield County - also known as the 'Gold Coast' is the second most expensive County in the U.S.

You might try heading north on I-95 toward Old Saybrook (30 miles or so). Rocky Neck is a large State beach in that area. Saybrook has great little seafood restaurants. The nearest amusement park would be Lake Compounce, a good choice if you have kids. Enjoy!

Head up route 7 to Kent falls. You can splash around in the morning and then head into the town of Kent for lunch. There's a hotdog place that won't disappoint. I don't remember the name, but you can't miss it. Then a little bit of antiquing on the way back.
