There is also a theory that water in a bag on the door will keep the room cooler. I have never heard anything about the flies before.

Here are some answers to the same question I found at http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/19342 not sure if they are correct bet others seem to agree that it does. I have never tried it myself...

"It works - the theory being that flies see this enormous monster clone of themselves and go away. Also potted sweet basil plants keep flies away - both methods frequently seen in rural Spain, especially the second.

I'll second the clear bag of water idea--the local diner uses them, and it seems to work.

I'll second the sweet basil...I have giant Jurrasic basil plants planted around my deck, and we never see flies anymore.

It is a bag of water with 2 or 3 pennies in it. i can't say how it work but it work excellent at my grandmother's place. She does not have the problem that she had before with flies.

There's probably something sweet in the bag so the flies are attracted to it...then they get caught in the bag and water.

t doesn't really work. The theory was that the flies got scared with the reflection of the light, but it's just a myth

The fly's multi-faceted eyes see the reflection as a swarm of other flies. That's the theory at least, no idea if it works or not.

This is supposed to work by magnifing the fly's reflection and scaring it away. I see a lot of these on the patios of Mexican Restaurants.
