To let the performer know that their performance was very good and they enjoyed it.
Even though where I live sometimes the audience will start clapping even before the performer is finished, this sometimes mean that they are bored.

To show that they enjoyed the performance ...You don't want to hear lots of folks say You Rocked..Clapping is way stronger, polite, and shows the performer how great of a job they did....

It's a common courtesy for the audience to let the performer know they liked their performance. This is what I call a mark of respect for the performer. Not doing so is not only rude, but also disrespectful. Regardless of you liking the performance or not, just applaud anyway.

They glad it over. But, the answers above are more correct. I think people Boo if they not like the Performance, and, sometimes they do throw things. Guess it depend on the environment of where the performance held.
