A good cheap combination is 3/4" MDF with 1/4" Birch or Oak playwood on the surfaces.

I would go with 3/4 birch plywood. I used it for a small unit a few weeks ago and was happy with the way it came out. For a more "finished" look I would also suggest buying the matching birch banding strips. It comes in coils with one side having a heat activated glue. I just put a piece of foil over the top of the strip and use a common iron to heat the glue. It worked well for me and leaves a stain-able edge while hiding the plys of the wood.

I would go with 3/4 inch birch. Takes paint, stain or varnish well. A little more expensive than pine plywood but pine has a wild grain that's difficult to hide.

I would go with an MDO or an MDF plywood, they provide a smooth finish and the ability to be painted or stained (MDO). They provide a splinterless surface. The MDO is a little pricey though. I would go with birch veneer for a low cost route, it too is smooth, virtually splinterless and takes a stain or paint well.

i would suggest a white birch or maple import plywood. the price is quite cheap( under $30 for the birch) and the quality will be fine for your project. avoid buying from home depot....way over priced.

u can use B/C plywood, but i would look into the 1x12 pre cut wood that most lowes/depot carry.

Obviously grade A veneer (Smooth and paintable) is best.
