Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu are the best strong safties in the NFL and John Lynch is the best free safety in the NFL, Roy Williams is a close thirt in the strong safeties. If I had to rank the above three based not only on stats but on leadership also it would be:
1.) John Lynch - Great leader, hits hard, stops the run
2.) Troy Polamalu - Becoming a leader, everywhere on the field
3.) Ed Reed - If this question was last year he would win, didn't have the best 2005-2006 season

the top two safties in the NFL thats a good question. the top two safties are troy polamalu and roy williams. they are the new generation of safties. they are the total package: quick feet, explosive tackling. they also do strategical things two. they can play at the line, they can cover, they can be extra linebackers.

Well since Palamalu is listed as a Safety you have to list him as one of the top two in my opinion.
