Crocodilians are said to have the strongest bite force of all vertebrates ... averaging over 2000 lbs. force. One Florida Alligator was measured at 2500 lbs. A saltwater crocodile has been said to hit the 3000 lb. mark. That is extremely impressive for any vertebrate.
The skull of the crocodilian, like all amniotic organisms, developed openings in the skull called temporal fenestrae. These openings allow for more muscle connection to the jaw, providing the bite force that we are accustomed to hearing about. In crocodilians, these fenestrae are large and the muscle bundles connected to their mandibles are thick and bigger in number.
The only animals (that I can think of) which produce a massive bite force without possessing temporal fenestrae are sharks.
