It depends where you are. Check Yellow Pages for Signboard Makers or visit a local craft fair or market for someone who does wooden house names.
I would have thought you would need a round post, so that you can have the fingers sticking out at the appropriate angles. Finding the exact distance and direction from your garden you can do from the website given by Jessi. 0 degrees will be North, so make a finger (or mark) for the North Pole first, then you can line it up with the sun or a compass.

use a 4x4 post to start with for the base and then use 2x4's for the "fingers"
