If I wanted to start getting my art work out there in the public how would I go about doing that? Should I have like a mini gallery for people to come and see?

I just went through this myself. Well, I am still going through it. You have to get personal. Galleries love to have a face to put with the artistic exspession. First, never just walk into a gallery thinking that you are going to just talk your way in or show anybody anything. Make an appointment, keep your appointment and be prepared to make the best presentation of your work as possible. Find out if the gallery accepts slides, digital media, photographs etc. before you prepare the portfolio (I recommend having everything digital and then creating slides, prints, cds etc. on an individual basis. each gallery gets an original portfolio). And don't expect the portfolio back. Also, pick galleries that show works similar to your own. I know every artist is original but at least get it close (no abstracts in a traditional landscape themed store)
And it takes patience, but if you get in a decent gallery, they will promote your work. They will have events and advertising and connections that will get you exposed.
Now the mini-gallery idea is ok, if you want to show to your friends and family or use it as an extention of your portfolio, but by itself you will not get seen by the people that need to see it.

So, that's my two cents worth.
Hope it helps.

Get your art photographed and make a few portfolios with the pictures. Take them to galleries, cafes, trendy coffee shops, etc. With the galleries you'll have to meet with whoever runs the place and have them look at your work and they'll decide whether they want to put it up or let you have a show. With the cafes and coffee shops you can let them see your work and ask if you can hang it there and if it sells you cut them in for a percentage. You can also try and convince them to have a small art show once in awhile to get them some business and to get you exposure. You can also try and find someone to represent you which will take a lot of pressure off of you and allow you to focus on your art. Don't forget about the internet either. You can make yourself a small portfolio website and get some business cards or just some kind of neat little card with your website on it to get peoples attention and drive them to the site. All this also depends on the style of art you're doing. If you can do commercial art then you can also try sending ad agencies samples, etc.

Have you tried to have your work displayed/sold by a commercial gallery. There is a web site or perhaps a number available for new artists to display and sell art. Check out the web but don't pay there are some set up by artists that are free.

Put it in a portfolio and take it to coffee shops and see if they will display it for you with your name on and a price label. People can admire it while they have their coffee and maybe even buy it from you. The coffee shop owner gets free art to decorate their shop.

I know this seems far away but in the fall put up a tent in your front yard and show it off if you really want to and people are interested, sell some of them.
