Use primary colors. Not just red.

I've worked in a bookstore for two years, and I would say that the sky's the limit on color and design, but that you should make sure that it's distinctive enough for both customers and booksellers to find, and make sure it doesn't resemble any other current new release books in the same subject. (We get a lot of "I don't know what it's called or who wrote it but it's pink and has a rubber duck on the cover")

I imagine red would. Red is a color that draws people to it.
