onefootnaked: I'm absolutely certain that God intended for humans to not travel any faster than their legs or the legs of beasts of burden can carry them.... however, most of us use cars, trains, and airplanes for transportation.
I'm fairly certain that God intended for humans to not build skyscrapers yet every major city has them... some of us even work inside them.
I'm relatively certain that to be a Christian like Jesus described his followers, we should give away all that we have, leave our families behind, and just follow Christ.... however I have never met the person who did that.
To answer the question here, abomination, in the bible really means "things hated by god." But it doesn't matter. Many things are listed in the Bible as an abomination, yet nobody seems to care until gay people want to be left alone.
The apostle Paul said that christians shouldn't get married, that it was better if they could live celibate lives like he did. But you don't notice any Christians trying to ban straight marriage.
The truth is it doesn't matter what the Bible says about homosexuality. It says so many crazy things that even if it said in clear and precise language that "god hates fags." I wouldn't pay it much attention.
It's not about god or christianity. It's about people loving people. Anybody against people loving people doesn't matter.

The original Hebrew word was "toevah" which was "abomination" in the sense of religious rites and temple practices.
It's also worth noting that in the places that many modern translations use "homosexual" the original language did not use a comparable word, even though they had them.
Also, much of the Bible has to be put in context. A comment was made about Paul saying it was best to remain single. This was based on his understanding that the Second Coming of Christ would occur within his lifetime and thus it would be useless to pursue worldly relationships at all. A slight mistake of misinterpretation on his part, I think. So where else could we find such?

It does mean something different, every quote that someone gives you from the bible is WRONG. Anyone who is really interested email me and I will email you a list of the most popular scriptures people use to say that it is wrong, along with the reason that ignorance has made people believe things about our loving God that is NOT true. GOD has one rule for us to love God and each other. All the things that people say are against God are usually made up for their own satisfaction.
The one I hear the most is the verse in Leviticus about man should not lie with another man, it meant it about all people man and women should not lie together or anyone else, it also meant you should not shake hands, you should not come in any contact with anyone!!! There was disease everywhere and they were trying to keep people from dying... had nothing at all to do with homosexuality... That scripture is in levitican law, which you may make it a point for anyone who tells you that it says being gay is wrong (after you explain that the verse has nothing to do with homosexuality) that if they are so keen on living out levitican law, then all women should be outside city limits during menstruating, and all men should never ever had cut their hair or beard.

Yes I am finding that many things in the bible have been misinterpreted. I have a wonderful link to a computer bible that is free and will help you interpret the bible if you would like here it is:
http://e-sword.net/
It gives the translation of any word in the bible and allows you to really understand how often the bible is misinterpreted.

The Old Testament had a long oral tradition before it was ever written down. Even if these were truly the words of God, like Chinese whispers there's nothing to say that they hadn't been corrupted or misinterpreted.
And as for the New Testament? Well, St Paul did get on his high horse about homosexual acts; although not with regard to homosexuals performing those acts.
Still, that's just MY interpretation of it all. I'm sure there are other's who'll think differently.

well... there is a mistranslation, but it's actually in the people and their behavior which was being called an abomination.
The people condemned are those who would (as was commong at the time) anally rape the people they conquered as a way of humiliating them, as well as the "pagan" temple prostitutues who engaged in a same-gender sexual practices as part of rituals.
It says nothing about homosexuals, actually. And, of course, there were words comparable to how "homosexual" is used today. If the writers had meant homosexuals, they would have used those words.

Alot of the bible is misinterpretted. As long as it fits into their life, they can believe it. When it becomes something they no longer want to believe (divorce, adultery are acceptable now) it becomes "ok" .

Onefootnaked, do you even read the Bible? Most of the marriages in the Bible are between one man and MULTIPLE women. Where does this "one man, one woman" thing come from?

I have a lot of gay friends. I absolutely love them, but I do think that God had intended for one woman and one man to be together.
