Yes, for a few days/week after birth, it's normal. They're clearing out the excess amniotic fluid from their throats. They sneeze a lot, too.
If you notice your baby's cough sounding wet and phlegmy, or her breathing is labored and you can see her chest sinking way down and making all her ribs stick out, this is NOT normal and requires a trip to the E.R. It could be a respiratory infection.

Newborns shouldn't cough unless somthing is obviously wrong! You really shouldn't take your baby around crowds anywhere until they start getting there shots (2months) I would call the doctor, but be persistant, if you think it might just be the common cold then you are probably okay!
If there are any other signs like baby isn't breathing well or is turning colors, choking etc.... then ask the doctor to do more than the norm!
My child concepted WHOOPING COUGH from his father... he started coughing normally 2 days before his first vaccines for this cough! Within a week and a half he would be fine in between coughing spells, but when he did cough he would start to choke, turn blue/purple... and couldn't breath between coughs! I took him to the doctor for them to only tell me he was FINE... it was just the common cold....
Well the next day he coughed up blood... I took him back to the doctor for them to finally take a culture and test for whooping cough... the test came back POSITIVE!
Moral of the story is newborns are succeptible to more than older babies and adults... if you are in doubt what soever go to the doctor... orelse it can become serious causing pneumonia, or death!

Mine sneezed all the time and coughed a little. It takes some newborns some time to get all of the fluid out of their systems. If it concerns you, however, see your pediatrician.

yes newborns cough and sneeze. It's their way of getting the fluid out of their lungs. It is normal, unless it is very excessive then of course you should take your baby to their dr.

No. Do not smoke around or wear 2nd hand smoke clothing around the baby. It could have RSV which is a respiratory virus that is very serious with small babies. You will need to call the Dr.

No, not unless they were born with a infection or fluid in the lungs. I would take him or her to the doctor before it gets worse!
