not in action or at work
u can set a time in your yahoo messenger preference for example 2min
so if u not use your computer for 2 mins it will show idle and your friends undrestand that u r not there
and your computer is unused in that time

it just means you havent been on in a while if you are signed in and not at your computer it will say idol for 20 minutes or whatever

It means that u din't use the messenger...for a long time...
