Sephiroth is the hardest boss in the game. If you are doing the hard version of the game then you don't need to beat Sephiroth to get the secret ending, but if you are playing the normal version you have to completely fill out the journal. (Remember at the beginning before you started you chose a level of difficulty). The Bradygame Stategy guide says that you need to be around level 80, but my little brother was able to beat the boss around level 60. My brother recommends becoming adept at using the trinity limit and combination boost (which boosts the effect of the limit), because this limit helped him win the battle. Use the Reaction Commands whenever possible during the fight. Also have plenty of Elixirs on hand to replenish your MP quickly. It is also helpful to have the glide ability from the final form, because it enables you to get out of danger quicker than running. Good luck in the fight!

I beat Sephiroth at lv 73, and even then he was ridiculously strong. Here's what I did:

First, equip:
High Jump
Quick Run
Airiel Dodge
Glide
Trinity Limit
Slapshot
Retaliating slash
Slide Dash
Guard Break
Guard
Airiel Recovery
Second Chance
Once More
Defender
Item Boost
Leaf Bracer
and anything else you think will help.

Customize Sora with:
elixers,
ethers/ mega ethers
reflect
curaga

Now for the fight:
At the start of the battle, press triangle until Sephiroth's first cut subsides, then attack. Always make sure you tilt the analog stick towards him, that way if he's too far away sliding dash will close the gap. After your attack, immediately use Trinity Limit. If you need cure, use either an ether or a potion, item boost will help out. REMEMBER, every time you finish an assualt, use quick dash to get away, because he'll slice you down if you don't. If he knocks you in the air, use retaliating slash but make sure you're timing is correct, hit square as soon as he pops back up. Alway Remember to hit triangle when the screen goes dark and you hear him say "that's enough"

When you hear him say "know your place" that when the battle starts to heat up. More likely than not, he'll say "give in to the darkness" and summon a swarm of dark balls around you. Use reflect to knock them away and block Sephiroth if he attacks. There's also his eruption attack when he says "perish now" and calls up towers of fire. Just run away because they'll pull you in and if you get caught inside, you're dead. The worst attack and the one you should always look out for is when he goes red, flies in the air and says "sin harvest angel." As fast as you can, jump, use airieal dogde to get closer faster, and knock him down. One hit will stop the atack. If it hits, you lose all you HP except one and he'll probably use the "that's enough" slash to finish you off. This is why you pack elixers, to make sure no matter what, you're healed and can use Curaga and reflect.

Once he has 4 and a half life bars left, he'll glow red, now the real fight is on. his slash is diffrent now. He'll attack more and on all side to where once more won't work all the time, so stay out of the danger zone. Every so often, he'll go in the air in front of the old Hollow Bastion castle and rain meteors on your head. You can avoid them with airiel dodge and glide.

Use every strategy you got, and you'll defeat him. He'll tell you to find Cloud so they can "settle things." After the cutscene, Tifa will give you the second strongest keyblade, Fenrir.

I was at 63 when I beat Sephiroth the first time. He is an incredibly hard boss to beat. As for the journal, I gave up hope on it. Your best bet to see the secret ending is to set the game on proud mode and beat it that way.

Yeah, Sephi is a tough battle. I'm at level 60 and I haven't been able to beat him yet. I'm thinking I have to be at level 99 or something! *lol*

There's a guide here:
