wELL, it all depends on what you want to do, and how much time you want to spend with just one another.
San Diego is going to be VERY hot this summer. Through August. Not as hot as Arizona, -- but it will be hot. And, unfortunately, you are going during tourist season -- lots of folks are here, escaping even hotter places.
In addition to the places you mentioned, I'd recommend the Windjammer Cruises which cruise San Diego Bay, with a dinner included.
There are lots of concerts on the Bay. And Balboa Park is a nice place to walk around -- museums, the planetarium (and the zoo).
$1,500 for four days should be just fine. Price of gasoline is high, so be prepared for an average of $3.20 per gallon, 87 octane.
Do NOT bother going to Mexico. The return crossing at the border will delay you 90-minutes to 2 hours.
Other romantic places in SD include La Jolla, Del Mar, Coronado on the coast. The beaches are all different, depending on what else you plan on doing. Ocean Beach is the hippest, with nice, friendly restaurants (very casual). The beach is fine there, with a long walk on the pier.
There are plenty of nice beaches -- ranging from the famous one next to the Hotel del Coronado, which I think is a bit overrated -- to La Jolla Shores, which is very expansive -- just try and get there by 10 a.m. so you can find parking.
Del Mar, Cardiff by the Sea and Encinitas are up the coast, and more secluded. Mission Bay is pleasant, but the water is polluted from all the motorboats. And, speaking of pollution, any beach near Mexico is pretty bad, due to their sewage which wanders across the border.
Old Town is a nice place to walk to -- with shops and restaurants and history.
Arizona is a wonderful place to visit -- but if you already live there, I'd go somewhere else. How long from AZ to San Diego depends on how fast you drive. Check out mapquest ; google maps and other online map sites and get an average -- they all vary.

San Diego is a great place to live. It has some of the best weather in the nation; it's mild and never too hot or cold when you live by the coast. It doesn't rain that much and usually has low humidity. You can always be outside year round doing stuff like hiking, cycling, or playing sports. It's such a beautiful city with all the hills, canyons, mountains, beaches, and water surrounding it. The people are really nice and friendly and unpretentiuous. Many people here are transplants too so you meet people from all over the place. It's a big city and there is always something to do but it kind of has a small town atmosphere and isn't nearly as congested or crowded as LA/Orange County and the SF Bay Area. The only downside is the cost of homes and gas. Homes prices have been flat or falling and you can find some homes for under 300K. You won't be able to get a house for that much but I was browisng through the paper this weekend and saw several 2 bedroom condos from under 300K.

I've spent time both in Phoenix and San Diego. Hands down it would be San Diego. I would love to retire there! You will not be disappointed with the zoo. You will definitely need an entire day there. The panda exhibit is wonderful! It is awesome to walk to Sea Port Village - you can spend most of the day there. There are tons of shops, neat places to eat and just hang out. I would not go into Mexico. It is very dirty and the food is awful. I've been there once and wouldn't waste my precious time going back. San Diego has tons of things to do and you can easily go for under $1500. If you want to stay at a really neat place stay at Humphrey's Half Moon Inn & Suites right on the bay. It's about 10 miles from the zoo. It is very romantic - if you want to check it out go to expedia.com or halfmoon.inn.com [turn your speakes up!] They also feature an awesome outdoor concert. It is absolutely wonderful! Can't wait to go again!

I have been to San Diego in both January and July and it was delightful both times. The only warning I'd have is that the ocean is still cold, even in July, and if you go to Sea World and stay after dark, it can get chilly when you're right on the water. We went to Coronado Island's beach, which was beautiful. The sand glistened as if it contained pyrite in it! Balboa Park, with all of its museums, is also a very good place to go. In general, SD is an excellent choice for taking a second honeymoon!

I been to both places. Hot in SanDiego right now. Hotter than Hot most likely. To much traffic ...to relax.
Sea world and the Zoo is great but be ready to walk far and it is very hot right now. You might not enjoy this time of year.
Parking is not like where I am.
Best beach to go to ... Gesh I would have to call my brother He lives there, [He has been there in the Navy for 19 yrs.]
however if you want peace and quit Arizona was a great place for that. Beautiful!
I got the flu maybe I shouldn't answer right now to many typos. Sorry!

You won't wanna leave! I would first suggest leaving Saturday morning around 7am. If you leave Friday afternoon/night it will take 4-5 hours. Trust me. Check out the gaslamp district for dinner and if youre into the night life, check it out Saturday night around 10 after the Padre game. The scene can be really electric. If your a young couple check out Pacific Beach, aka PB. Coronado is fun to check out for a good sunset. Just drive over the big blue bridge in the Bay. Like casinos? Check out Viejas off the the 8 in the mountains. Sea World and the Zoo would be expensive together, so I would choose the zoo. Its a wonder of the world you wont be dissapointed. Lastly like shopping? Check out Seaport Village and Horton Plaza in downtown.

There are many of passions to follow in San Diego and this hotelbye is the place to begin finds what San Diego needs to offer. In the San Diego holiday you will stage outside of one's safe place and you will examine new activities while you're here and you could just realize that finding a fresh pursuit is definitely an adventure in itself. Among the areas should see from San Diego is Balboa Park. That park has over a 1400 acre and here you will find traditional houses, numerous museums, gardens, and natural space. The park was made for the Panama California Exhibition of 1915-1916. The predominant architecture is Spanish-Mexican design, minimal stage buildings that merge with the natural surroundings. On the list of shows of the park are the Botanical Gardens and lily lake, the Museum of Man, the Museum of Natural History, the San Diego Museum of Art, and the famous San Diego Zoo. Even though you never go into a creating the park is just an attractive place.
