But in all of the back-slapping self-congratulations about a fabulously rich democrat giving away 85% of his wealth to the Gates Foundation, they TOTALLY missed the reason why he did it: to avoid the death tax. The same liberal imbiciles who wallow on the ground, crying, screeching that the rich should be taxed again at death are too stupid to realize that Buffet just avoided having to pay the gov't 50% of his assets when he dies (which is not too far of), thus depriving all those poor individuals that liberal loonies are always crying about here in America. So now the gov't gets no cut, and you moral retards didn't even see it. Enjoy.

You're kidding right? Buffett's assets are not US held and therefore not subject to the estate tax. And furthermore, the tax on estate is only 3% - which at that monitary level wouldn't even be noticeable.

Second, as a republican, why would you be so upset that he kept the wealth in private hands vs. the gov getting it? Even better is that it is going to charity that he and gates can influence.

What does this have to do with Liberals? Nothing, except maybe that he is supporting something Liberals support as well-- helping those who are need of help. And they're NOT doing it with Goverment money which you Righties simply cannot stand -- yet you're more than willing to have corporate welfare.

Lastly, if I remember correctly Buffet AND Gates were two people who supported keeping the Estate Tax in place.

Let's see Buffet saved millions of dollars by not establishing yet another FOUNDATION to protect his wealth under a 1959 law that the Kennedy's, Waltons (Wal-Mart), Gates', and other wealthy families enjoy exemption under. That law was designed to dodge the death tax through establishing just such FOUNDATIONS to keep wealth intact and allow for Endowment of that wealth without taxation for humanitarian purposes. In the long run it was thought that not taxing great fortunes passed in that way would benefit humanity more than collecting the tax revenue. IF GOOD COMES FROM THE BEQUEST THAN ALL WILL BENEFIT from it and the reality is who cares if taxes weren't paid...

Irony is that our Republican President and Republican Congress rigged themselves a Republican Supreme Court, who then actually did their jobs and slapped the Bush Administration yesterday for subverting the Constitution by being "moral retards" and ignoring both our own laws and the geneva convention as it applies to detaining and trying war criminals. It's hilarious that a conservative can't imagine a rich man making a charitable donation as anything but a scheme. Surely it must be to avoid the death tax, because Republicans have made darn sure that the uber-rich aren't taxed in life. Celebrate the little victories friend, a rich man just got out of paying his taxes- isn't that a republican ideal?

P.P.S. i think there is nothing wrong with buffett giving to the charitable organization to avoid the death tax. that is why this particular tax credit loophole is legal. because the money in question will be distributed by the charity of his choice to people who need it and not tied up in the bureaucracy of the government. you are not very bright if you don't get that.

Good for him. Why should he have to pay 50% of his fortune to the government as the death tax?

The death tax is very wrong to make it so that someone who for instance creates a business and works all their lives putting everything into it. When that person dies the government would force the sale of that business to pay the death tax instead of being able to pass it on to his children.
