a compact town/city center where there are only roads for delivery and emergency vehicles, otherwise its all bike lanes footpaths and light rail systems. Wouldn't that be a great way to live? What do you think?

No, for the following reasons:

1) A lot of people want open space around their homes, not "compact" spaces where your neighbors are only a few feet away from you.

2) Your plan sets up public transportation as a forced monopoly. Service would suck, because there is no competition to keep it good, and there would be nothing people could do about it. And if there's a strike or a service change, you're screwed. Just ask the people of New York; they had a transit strike recently.

3) If you depend on public transportation, you can only go where it goes, when it goes. If you want to go somewhere else or at some other time, you need a car. If your job hours change, or the company moves to a different building, and the mass transit doesn't go there or run at those hours, you're screwed.

4) Without a car, you can't transport anything bigger than you can carry with you. This puts you at the mercy of delivery drivers for things that you could put in your car trunk if you had one, which means you'll have to take lots of days off from work so you can be home "between 1 and 5pm" to receive the delivery.

5) Limited transportation destinations mean limited economic competition. If you have a car, you can drive to the next town - or even just the next block - to a cheaper store, a better doctor, a nicer restaurant, whatever. If people can't do that, they're stuck with providers that have no incentive to be competitive.

6) Mass transit is wasteful of personal time. With a car, if I need to go someplace, I can just GO - right now, by the most direct route. With public transportation, I have to wait until the next train; sit there while it stops at every station along the way; and quite likely waste time changing trains or waiting for it to meander its way to some approximate destination. Maybe other people can waste half their day in pointless waiting, but I have a lot of things to do.

Sorry, but no. I'm sick of New Urbanists trying to force these centrally-planned communities on people who didn't ask for them and don't want to live that way. Give me suburban sprawl any day. We've got the land. If you don't believe me, drive the length of Indiana someday.

I like grass, fields, I like being able to run around in my yard, have a compost heap, tree forts, a big trampoline and room for a bonfire.

As quaint as that sounds...no.

Yeah it would be - know why?

Less Co2 emissions into the atmosphere. It is not only safer, but much much healthier as well. Good idea!

I'd love to, but I'm allergic to pollen, caterpillars, bees, ducks, and the like. I fear I'd be dead in a week.
