and, how much does it cost, on average, to turn it off but not shut down total power at night? (not pushing the surge protector at night.)

Very little cost. :) Computers use very little power, and electrical power is cheap. If you left your computer on 24 hours a day, you're probably using roughly 10 cents of electricity in a day. Turning it on and off is hard on the hard drive. Good rule of thumb is to turn it on when you go to use it, and leave it on the remainder of the day until you're done with it for the day. You can turn on and off the screen, that'll increase your screen life. But turning it on and off a lot puts stress on the hard drive. Mostly leave it on once it's on.

uh either you shut it off or you don't. the surge protector doesn't take that much power i keep mine off and my electricity isn't that bad. its only about 5 dollars more than normal, but i'm in an apartment

I'm not sure, but I read somewhere that turning if off and on throughout the day eats up more electricity than just letting it run all day. I leave mine on a lot because I'm impatient and don't want to wait for it to boot.

I heard that it costs around $.60 per day to keep the monitor on.
