That's because the roots are still there. You need to use a weed killer. Use Scott's Weed and Feed a couple times a year or for spot treatment, Ortho has a spray that works really well (Ortho Weed-Be-Gone I think) and won't kill your grass.
You don't need to put down sod. Even sod will have weeds. You just need to kill the weed roots.
Another good idea is to use insecticide a couple times a year too. It will help take care of grubs that cause brown spots in your yard and it will also help kill the Japanese beetles that eat up your plants like crazy. They start out as larvae in the ground.
I combated with the same problems with my yard. Has taken me 2 years, but it is finally coming around and looking great. If you're going to put down grass, it is best to in the spring or fall. They put my sod down in the middle of summer and I had no choice in the matter (new house). They put my neighbors' down a month or so later when it was cooler and theirs did much better. With the treatments I use though, mine looks better than theirs now.

Keep your grass on the longer side than cutting too low. It will stop some weeds from getting sunlight to germinate. The weeds that are there just keep spraying them with weed killer. Over time as your lawn matures the fertilizer with weed control will will help and the healthy lawn will choke out the weeds. My lawn is about 3 years old now and had the same problem, it now looks great. So be patient and it will look great.

Yea weeds a pain. As the Grass becomes more established it will eventually "Choke" out the weeds. Weeds are funny, their seed can lay Dormant for YEARS! When you Disturb the Soil it just get them going again. After time the Soil settle down and the Grass Grow and your weed problem will go away. But, for now you can pull them keeping them from going to Seed. Also, there are Fertilizers that Help the Grass and Kill the weeds. Sometimes when I start a new lawn I let the Grass go to seed and then mow, this helps it to thicken up. Lawn may not look as good for the time, but, in time it get real full. My Saint Augustine not have much seed, but, spread with runners. It took many years, but, now it so pretty and full. Only weeds are from a seed that may Blow in or be dropped by a Bird. I pull them as I see them and it VERY Seldom.

I work for a landscaping company what most of my customers to is rip out the old lawn and use sod, becuase if you reseed most likely you'll be putting weeds back down, or you can reseed with Kentucky Blue Grass seeds.

My friend uses weed and feed....
kinda of politically incorrect here in Seattle.
But she compensates by being recycling maniac.
Seattle is recycling town....big time.
Dandelions are the worst.
Would not hurt to try it once and see what happens
