I've heard that they use less water and electricity, but what are they exactly? What is so different about them?

Yes a front load uses much less water. I have the Maytag Neptune. It adds water according to the weight of the laundry. typically, a full cycle uses about 10 gallons of water. A top load washer uses four times as much water.

But the big advantage is that there is no agitator. That means you can wash delicates as well as shove a whole comforter in the washer with no worry that things will come out torn.

I recently bought a Whirlpool Duet (a front loader) to replace our old Kenmore top loader.

So far, I am not impressed. My water bill hasn't dropped. And, I don't like that I have to completely double over when I load/unload it (I am 6'). It does wash better, but our old one was over 10 years old, so that isn't surprising.
