I have bought a laptop from IBM and have bought a desktop from Compaq (now part of HP). The compaq hard drive constantly broke and I don't think I will get a Compaq again. The IBM laptop has been wonderful so far.

If you would call Gateway a big name vendor. If yes then I bought my computer from the company gateway. You might have seen this computer before. But I have the latest one from them with the 17 inch LCD flat panel monitor. I had a great experience with them without the hassle. Wish the price could have been cheaper but I guess what I have was worth the buck.

I bought a Dell Dimension P75. The power supply was AT but it used an ATX connector and the CPU was glued to the socket. The hard drive made a funny noise but they sent someone to fix it right away. I also bought an IBM Thinkpad 755 (?). The screen was all blurry and I ended up returning it.
Now is the time for you to say "Thanks for the info, grandpa".

I got an HP Pavilion Laptop two years ago and it has served me well. It has enough speed and capabilities that make it a good choice for some.
Big, Heavy, hot, short battery life are the downers, but still worth it to me.
