i was told that they will be making a decision within two weeks because they had just started the interview process. I had the interview yesterday. Is it ok to go ahead and send it today?

Don't wait, send a thank-you note right away. Include a reference to a topic you disscussed in your interview like ... "Dear Mr. Smith, thank you for meeting with me yesterday. As we disscussed, I am certain my retail sales experience can be an asset to you and Xcompany. I will contact you on x/xx to hear of your decision regarding Xposition. It was a pleasure speaking with you, and I enjoyed learning more about the mission of Xcompany.

No, if they told you two weeks, wait two weeks. If you send it now they will just throw it away because they are not done with the interview process yet and will not consider it at all. Or the other alternative is that they will just file it away and forget about it in two weeks. But if you send it in two weeks then they will spend more time and attention on it.

You should send a thank you letter within 24 hours. They will usually tell you when you can expect an answer; send your follow-up letter to arrive three to four days before this point. But the follow-up letter is usually not necessary if you have sent the thank you letter. Good luck!

the same day after a couple of hours is OK. remember many candidates know that already and you never know how close the hiring person is from making a decision, so the sooner the better. don't forget to mention again the value that you would add to the company and why you are a great fit for the job.
Good Luck!!!

I send a "Bread and Butter" letter that afternoon, thanking the interviewer for the experience, updating my contact information, and expressing my enthusiasm for the position. It can be five sentences, and should not be more than a half-page.
Then wait.

Send a thank you letter immediately and then wait about a week (no more than that) to contact them regarding hiring.

Don't wait, send the letter the very same day or ASAP.
Thenk them for their time & let them know that you're interested in the position. Reiterate key points like your experience.
