If you're in the US, you can get one free report from each of the three major reporting agencies each year for free, no strings attached, at the website in sources (you can also get a free one if you've been denied credit for reasons of creditworthiness). You can also order your credit score through this site for a fee (seems like it was $7-10).
My recommendation is to get just one report every four months (Experian in July, TransUnion in November, Equifax in March). That way, you keep tabs on your report all year long for FREE.
