I believe it is a formal diplomatic relationship.

...except when the world cup happens. then, the pope and the royal family get together for a big ol' barbeque. the pope wears the big hat, but a mini-robe. For her part, HRH likes to sport a pair of Daisy Duke shorts and a tube top, just because she can. She is the Queen, dammit - who's going to stop her?

The Queen is nothing more than a symbol of the Anglian Church and of the Kingdom (the state). She has no powers whatsoever other than suasion.

Your question properly should have been what is the nature of the Anglian High Council of the United Kingdom (specifically, its titual head--the Archbishop of Canterbury) and the Vatican.

And the answer to that is that there is a dialogue and now a common communion. Unity of the two is still very far in the future, if ever--but they are at least talking about their rituals, Mary as a object of worship and their respective creeds.

And that is where it stands today.
