I've got a $40 pair of earbuds for my Ipod. They are the ones that actually fit in your eardrum area and block out all outside sound. I have gone through multiple pairs because the wire near the ear piece eventually becomes exposed. Is there anything I can do to avoid this other than better care?

Are you using Sonys by any chance? If you are, you might want to consider trying a different brand. I had the same problem with my Sony Fontopia earbuds and, come to find out, it's an extremely common problem with them because they have weak wires compared to other brands.

But whatever they are, better care would definitely help. Like someone said, don't sleep with them in. Make sure you never remove them from your ears by pulling on the cord. It would also be good to keep them in some kind of case when you're not wearing them, rather then just shoving them in your pocket or something. I know people who use empty Altoid cases for this.
