The Operating System is the basic program which provides your computer with a way of handling files, a 'user interface' (what you see on screen and the ability to use a mouse and keyboard to communicate with the computer). If the screen can show graphics (different fonts, pictures and so on) then it is a 'graphical user interface' or GUI.

The heart of the operating system - the main files without which it wouldn't work - is called the 'kernel' (as the kernel of a nut is the heart of a nut).

In computer science, the kernel is the core piece of most operating systems. It is a piece of software responsible for the communication between hardware and software components.

As a basic component of an operating system, a kernel provides abstraction layers for hardware, especially for memory, processors and communication between hardware and software. It also provides software facilities to userland applications such as process abstractions, inter-process communication and system calls.
