We didn't read the complete directions on the stain we used, and therefore did not wipe up the excess stain as we applied it. So now, 24 hours later the stain is still very tacky and doesn't seem close to drying. What's the best course of action? We'd prefer to not wait a week for it to completely dry as we use that room quite a bit under normal circumstatnces.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

The key here is that you are using a stain, not a paint. Wipe up the excess, The only stain that matters is what is absorbed into the wood. The rest will just rub off, anyway. If you laid an even coat on a properly prepared surface, you should get an even finish when you wipe off the excess. But do it, in any case. This is stain, and will NEVER dry to a hard finish ... it will just dry to a tacky sludge. As noted above, use a light moistening with mineral spirits, if necessary, to pull up the rest of the goo.

It should have been wiped down, it may stay tacky because of the oil base in the stain, you may have to use rags dipped in mineral spirits and wipe down to achieve the color you want then get fans blowing on the floor with high humidity it takes time for the stain to dry..........I had a friend that done the same thing finishing a piece of furniture and after three days we sanded the whole thing down and started over.

If you have more stain then put on another very light coat and remove with a cloth. This will not only help remove some excess it will also make the finished floor look much better. The only reason I would add another coat is to rewet the existing stain so that you can remove some excess.

Best to just wait. Don't walk on them, and if you use a fan have it blow the other way to suck the air across the floor, otherwise you will just blow a bunch of unwanted stuff all over the tacky floor which will really upset you after waiting so long. Besides, most good floor products take 48 to 72 hours to dry hard.

If you like the color then you must stay off of it. Go and buy a fan and place in the door way and let is help speed the drying process

Try putting several large fans blowing on the floor, maybe that will help dry faster.
